OASI/IV – Old Age and Survivors' Insurance and invalidity insurance

Anyone who currently lives and works in Switzerland, or has done so in the past, and has contributed to the OASI and IV schemes may claim a pension on reaching statutory retirement age. Claimants are required to disclose information to their local compensation office. To avoid paying benefits that are not due, the SCO needs to verify that claimants are genuine and actually alive.

Automation of the life certificate process for AHV/IV pensioners

From 01.01.2022 on, Swiss nationals resident abroad will in general not receive an application for a life certificate anymore. The condition for this is that they are registered with a Swiss representation in their country of residence. The information is sent directly to the Swiss Compensation Office by the Register of the Swiss Abroad.

Swiss nationals who are not registered with a Swiss representation will continue to receive applications for life certificates.

In exceptional cases, registered persons may nevertheless receive such an application. In this case, the persons concerned must complete this document and have it confirmed in order to prevent their pension from being suspended.

Switzerland has a three-pillar pension system:

  • Pillar 1 – Old Age and Survivors' Insurance (OASI) and invalidity insurance (IV) – is a general, mandatory insurance scheme that provides a subsistence level income.
  • Pillar 2 – the occupational pension – is mandatory for employees. The aim of the Pillar 2 pension, combined with Pillar 1, is to allow retirees to maintain the standard of living to which they are accustomed.
  • Pillar 3 is a voluntary private pension to which individuals can contribute based on their needs.
